GUTTER BOOKSHOP – We are an independent bookshop based in Dublin, Ireland. Our original store opened on Cow’s Lane in Temple Bar in 2009, and we opened our second shop in Dalkey, a seaside village in South Dublin in 2013. VIBES AND SCRIBES – Our story started in November 1991 when Joan Lucey opened a small book shop in Macroom, County Cork. Although it was thriving, Joan decided after a while that she needed a new challenge. When she heard that the building on Bridge Street in Cork City was up for sale, Joan took a chance and opened with 1800 square feet of retail space. About six years after opening, and following a few extensions, there was 5000 square feet of space available in the shop. Vibes and Scribes soon carved a niche for itself as it did not directly compete with the big chain shops. Instead, Joan focused on supplying her customers with good quality bargain books and she also dealt in second hand books.

HODGES FIGGIS – From where our story began in 1768 at 10 Skinner’s Row to our much-loved home today at 56-58 Dawson Street, Hodges Figgis has been an essential element of Dublin’s cultural tradition for years. LIBER – Liber is more than a bookshop. It is a local and independent bookshop in the heart of Yeats’ country. This is a place steeped in arts. We are dripping in … yes, rain … but definitely arts. There are musicians, writers, filmmakers, actors, directors and artists on every street corner here in Sligo. At Liber we cherish them by selling and promoting their works. We stock a wide range of local interest titles – from cooking with surfers and foraging for seaweed to everything you want to know about Yeats. We also sell many general titles, including music. Where possible, we source our books from local Irish wholesalers and publishers in an effort to reduce waste and support Irish jobs. We endeavour to support local authors and events where we can.

A family business, with customer service as the main distinguishing factor between it and other bookselling businesses in the country, O’Mahony’s employs 80 staff who have a wealth of bookselling knowledge, enjoy their work and contribute to the ongoing success of this company. With its Limerick headquarters – the recipient of an RIAI award – and three other branches, no Irish bookseller can match the wide diversity of stock and broad customer base as O’Mahony’s.

Our bookshop differs in the sense that it is so small and yet manages to have such a wide and diverse range of stock. We pride ourselves in the fact that we order each and every book with such fervour and an ingrained instinct as to what our customer requires. This is crucial in such a tiny shop as we cannot afford to make errors in judgement; each title has to warrant its place on our shelves. most importantly we provide a service for the local community and we are the first place of call for so many visiting authors, poets and artists.

BOOKS UPSTAIRS – Books Upstairs was first opened in May 1978 by Maurice Earls and Enda O’Doherty. The shop was located in an old hairdressers upstairs (appropriately enough) above a furrier shop on Dublin’s South King Street. The old hand basins were removed, shelves built from scratch and furniture painted a bright cherry red. The two friends set out to open a bookshop which would support the positive role of books in society and particularly in Irish culture. The stock focussed on literature, history and politics, but also introduced previously absent or underrepresented genres and authors to Ireland, stocking philosophy, literary criticism, psychology, feminism and gay literature. The shop always made space for a wide range of literary and political journals. Encouraging the circulation of ideas was an early objective that we persist in these 40+ years later.
